Planting Hope: Farming families and changing their narrative

The Fundación Banco Arquidiocesano de Alimentos de Bogotá was founded in 2001 with the purpose to improve nutrition among vulnerable populations in the capital, especially nursing mothers, children, and senior citizens. The Banco receives food donations from companies, warehouses, farmers, and individuals. Then the Banco identifies, stores, and distributes food in an effective and responsible manner to guarantee maximum outreach and impact.

In Colombia, 1.5 million tons of fruits and vegetables are thrown away annually. In contrast to this waste, every day 8 kids die from malnutrition in our country. In Bogota and its surrounding area, there are 2 million people without food security according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

We seek to link 50 farming families in the rural zone of Bogota with a food bank as direct suppliers. Moreover, we train them to increase planting and growing conditions of their produce. Lastly, we seek to diversify healthy diets and nutrition within these families and their communities.
