Caring for smiles in Port-au-Prince

On the outskirts of Port-au-Prince in the town of Croix des Bouquets we developed a dental health program for children and adults at the Klinik Saint Sprit. Every day, hundreds of people suffering from dental infections and toothaches come to the clinic to be treated by our medically trained volunteers.
Our regional partner is: Klinik Saint Sprit

Almost half of the Haitian population does not have access to health care, especially those who are poor. The Klinik Saint Sprit is the only private health clinic that offers free services to the most vulnerable in Croix des Bouquets. However, its ability to take care of dental needs is limited because of a lack of trained dental professionals, a high number of patients with poor oral hygiene habits and limited education on how to prevent disease.

In order to improve the dental health of the Croix de Bouquets community we provide specialized medical attention. We have been able to extend coverage from just extractions and urgent care to include fillings, periodontal treatments and other more complex treatments. We have implemented programs to promote oral health and disease prevention as well as programs that raise the standard of care by introducing certain features such as appointment scheduling systems, clinic records, follow-up treatment, etc.

This project directly benefits more than 1000 men and women in Croix des Bouquets. The project also reaches 200 children at the San Carlos de Borromeo school, where 80% of the students live in extreme poverty. Sixty pregnant women from the community have also received dental care through this program and medical care from the clinic.
